(Photo: AP) A United Airlines passenger plane struck a light pole while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, damaging a delivery truck on the nearby highway, authorities said. The aircraft, a Boeing 767, was arriving from Venice with 221 passengers and 10 crew members on board. The airline said no one on the flight was injured. The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane landed safely after it “came into contact with a light pole” during its final approach. The pole then hit a Jeep travelling on the road. The driver of the truck was taken to hospital with minor injuries and later released, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the airport. Aircraft approaching Newark often fly low over the New Jersey Turnpike, one of the busiest sections of Interstate 95, with the runway beginning close to the road. It added that the aircraft had “minor damage” and the runway was checked for debris before normal operations resumed. United said its maintenance team would assess the aircraft and that the crew had been taken off duty while a safety review takes place. The National Transportation Safety Board said an investigator would arrive on Monday. It has asked the airline to provide the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, the agency said.
